Thursday 3 May, 6:00pm
St John’s Waterloo, London SE1 8TY

PROGRAMME

  • Fanny Mendelssohn Overture
  • Felix Mendelssohn Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 11

OVERVIEW

For over a decade, players from the Academy have been mentoring the orchestral players of the future, working side by side with members of Southbank Sinfonia.  The young players work with our musicians in the spirit of the Academy, performing without a conductor as a collaborative ensemble.

This year the project will culminate in a rush-hour concert celebrating the talent of Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn. “This child is really something special” said the teacher of both siblings, but it was to Fanny that he was referring. Huge obstacles were placed in the path of her composing career, but pieces like the Overture shine with extravagant invention and showcase a talent cruelly curtailed. Her music is paired in this programme with her brother’s fiery First Symphony, written when he was just a teenager.

Read an interview with Southbank Sinfonia violinist Yena Choi, who talks about her experience of working with Academy musicians.
