SOUNDS IN SHELTER
Many participants come to our music projects experiencing low confidence, limited autonomy, and social isolation, often due to challenging personal or societal circumstances. Our group-based sessions address these issues by creating a safe, inclusive space where individuals can connect, express themselves, and build supportive relationships through improvised music-making and performance.
The Academy of St Martin in the Fields leverages 25 years of experience working with people who have experienced homelessness through projects based on the principles of our chamber orchestra – creative freedom and joyful, collaborative music-making. Expanding in 2025/26 to six locations and working with new partners, ASMF aims to reach 110 more individuals, who will work with our musicians and workshop leaders through partnerships with frontline homelessness centres across London.
‘The music group is really wonderful for everyone’s spirit. When you’re homeless you can end up so low, and the music group is one of the main things that changes how I feel and gives me some motivation.’ Participant, The Connection
