The Academy of St Martin in the Fields is proud to be partnering with the Museum of Jewish Heritage for this very special performance given by the ASMF Chamber Ensemble.
The Academy Chamber Ensemble was formed in 1967, drawing its membership from the world-renowned chamber orchestra the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, which was itself founded by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958 and is currently led by Music Director Joshua Bell. The purpose behind the formation of the Chamber Ensemble was to perform the larger scale chamber music repertoire with players who customarily worked together, instead of the usual string quartet with additional guests. Drawn from the principal players of the orchestra and play-directed by Academy Director / Leader Tomo Keller, the Chamber Ensemble now performs in multiple configurations from wind trios to string octets and remains in demand around the world.
The ASMF Chamber Ensemble have put together a very special programme for this occasion. Opening the event, the ensemble will play a movement from Schulhoff’s String Sextet. Erwin Schulhoff was a Czech-Jewish composer who died of tuberculosis in the Würzburg concentration camp in August 1942. The Nazis banned his music, labelling it Entartete Musik (degenerate music) due to his Jewish heritage. Korngold’s music also carries strong associations with the lost world of assimilated Central European Jewish culture. Mendelssohn’s iconic String Octet closes the programme. Mendelssohn’s Jewish identity is culturally and historically significant, particularly in German-speaking contexts, because of the complicated history of Jewish assimilation and later suppression of his music.

The concert commences at 7pm and will be approximately 1 hour 45 minutes in length, including a 20 minute interval. Top price ticket purchasers will be invited to a post-concert ‘meet and greet’ with the musicians.
