The Academy of St Martin in the Fields returns to New York with a programme built around one of America’s most compelling voices. Pianist, composer and ASMF Spotlight Artist Conrad Tao, a New Yorker performing in his home city, joins the Academy of St Martin in the Fields for an evening that puts American music at its centre, from Crawford Seeger to Copland.

Few musicians working today are equally celebrated as a performer and a composer and utterly distinctive as both. Praised by the New York Times for his “probing intellect and open-hearted vision”, Tao has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Cleveland Orchestra. His recordings on Warner Classics have been widely acclaimed, and his work crosses boundaries freely, taking in collaborations with dancers, visual artists and contemporary composers alongside the core classical repertoire. He is, in short, exactly the kind of artist who makes a concert feel like an event.
At the centre of the programme, Tao performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, its lyrical poise and inward expressiveness offering a compelling contrast. ASMF is the orchestra the world turns to for Mozart and hearing them perform it with a soloist of Tao’s calibre is not an opportunity to miss. He also presents a new commission written for ASMF, bringing his dual perspective as composer and performer to the fore.
The concert opens with Ruth Crawford Seeger’s Music for Small Orchestra, a work of striking originality, before closing with Copland’s Appalachian Spring, performed in the original version he wrote for Martha Graham’s landmark 1944 ballet, a work shaped by American folk traditions, evoking a landscape of wide-open spaces and hard-won joy, and one of the most enduring ballet scores in the orchestral repertoire. There are few more joyful ways to spend an evening in New York.
