Eric Lu, winner of the 2025 International Chopin Piano and the 2018 Leeds International Piano competitions, makes his debut with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in a programme that journeys from darkness to light, centred on Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor.
Haydn’s Symphony No.44 (nicknamed Trauer) opens the concert with a fierce energy before a deeply expressive slow movement of quiet intensity. This leads into Mozart’s turbulent D minor concerto, the one Beethoven loved above all others.
The second half belongs to the light: first Chopin’s Andante spianato and Grande polonaise brillante, which ignites into exuberant dancing energy after the floating solo piano opening.
The concert concludes with Schubert’s Symphony No.3, an early sunlit work, without the longing and shadows of his later writing – bringing the programme to a buoyant and spirited close.
Academy of St Martin in the Fields is the principal orchestral partner of the St Martin-in-the-Fields, which is its historic home.
