The Academy of St Martin in the Fields in partnership with BBC Radio 3 present pianist Julius Asal as the inaugural ASMF BBC New Generation Associate. The programme will include Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 22 in Eb Major, K. 482, a piece that radiates innovation and creativity (his first piano concerto to use the clarinet), Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major and his Tombeau de Couperin scored for orchestra. A moving piece where each movement is dedicated to a friend of Ravel’s who had died in WW1, and one of his most ingenious pieces of orchestration.
“Julius Asal’s piano playing immediately astonished me. I don’t know how he found his uniquely sonorous sound. The instrument seemed to tell him a secret.” MENAHEM PRESSLER
Continuing its long tradition of supporting young artists, ASMF will offer one BBC New Generation Artist each season the unique opportunity to direct the orchestra as a concerto soloist, creating ambitious and collaborative performances that transcend the more traditional conductor-led model. The selected artist will receive coaching and mentoring from ASMF Principal Artist Murray Perahia, culminating in a concert at the orchestra’s historic home, St Martin in the Fields, where ASMF is Principal Orchestral Partner, broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
