24 June: Joshua Bell plays Tchaikovsky

Beethoven Overture to Egmont, Op. 84
Bizet Symphony No. 1
Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35

Joshua Bell, violin

In a magical marriage of collegial warmth and jaw-dropping virtuosity, Tchaikovsky’s hugely popular Violin Concerto opens the Bravo! Vail season alongside the exuberant high spirits of Bizet’s first symphony.

26 June: Beethoven’s “Eroica”

Dvořák Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53
Beethoven Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55, “Eroica”

Joshua Bell, violin

Dvořák draws on the striking vitality of Slavic folklore and lyricism for this spirited concerto, perfectly paired with the sublime struggle and transcendence of Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony, heralding the Romantic era.

27 June: All-Mozart Evening

Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219, “Turkish”
Mozart Symphony No. 38 in D major, K. 504, “Prague”
Mozart Concerto for Piano No. 9 in E-flat major, K. 271

Joshua Bell, violin
Anne-Marie McDermott, piano

A whirlwind grand tour of music by Mozart! Travel from the delightful “Turkish” violin concerto through the rich harmonies and bohemian colors of the “Prague” symphony, arriving at the piano concerto declared “one of the greatest wonders of the world” (Alfred Brendel).

29 June: Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble

Harvey de Souza, violin
Martin Burgess, violin
Robert Smissen, viola
Fiona Bonds, viola

Mendelssohn Quintet for Two Violins, Two Violas and Cello No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 87

An exquisite evening featuring three brilliant jewels of chamber music for strings, performed by an ensemble drawn from the Academy’s principal players. Explore subtle gradations between dark anguish and calm respite, balanced with Mozart’s trademark humor, then delight in Mendelssohn’s shimmering, seamless craftsmanship and triumphant flourishes.
